# Context engineering vs prompt engineering

Prompt engineering is about wording the instruction well. Context engineering is about assembling the right information for the agent to read. For agents that act in the real world, the context usually matters more than the phrasing.

## Prompt engineering

Prompt engineering shapes the instruction: the wording, the examples, the format you ask for. It still matters, but it operates on what you say to the model, not on what the model knows about the situation.

## Context engineering

Context engineering is the work of deciding what the agent should have in front of it, and getting that information there in a usable shape. For an agent acting on a live situation, most of the quality comes from the context, not the phrasing. A well-worded prompt over stale or missing state still guesses.

## Why context matters more

As agents take on real tasks, the hard problem moves from wording to grounding. Assembling current, relevant state, and keeping it fresh, is what makes an agent useful. A plain instruction over good context usually beats a clever prompt over none.
